Abstract:
Ifewara-Zungeru fault constitutes the longest linear feature in the Precambrian basement complex of Nigeria. It is an over 550km-long NNE-SSW trending fault which stretches just east of Ijebu Ode in the south, through Ifewara and Okemesi to the southwestern edge of River Niger around Lafiagi. It reappears beneath the sediments of the Nupe Basin and extends northeastwards for over 300km, through Zungeru (as the Zungeru mylonite) to Kalangai (as the Kalangai Fault). Hitherto, no previous worker on this part of the Nigerian basement complex has looked at this megalinear as a continuous entity. In this study, Landsat, SPOT, and side-looking airborne radar images as well as aerial photographs of the zone traversed by the Ifewara-Zungeru Fault zone were studied. Lineaments extracted from the different images are presented as lineament maps, azimuth frequency/length curves, rose diagrams as well as density and intersection maps. Results from the studies indicate the existence of three general sets of fractures: a NNE-SSW set which corresponds mainly to the trend of the Ifewara-Zungeru Fault; an E-W set which is more or less normal to the orientation of the quartzite bands and is associated with gold mineralization in Ilesa area; and a NW-SE set which is associated largely with migmatites and gneisses. The study has also enabled a comparison of the various remote sensing image types and their usefulness for extracting lithologic and structural information over inaccessible basement terrains. For example, the generally continuous and curvilinear nature of the fault zone was better observed on the Landsat and SLAR images, thereby confirming the versatility of these images in the mapping of regional structures. Results of this study also suggest that the Ifewara-Zungeru fault might have developed as a paratectonic suture during the evolution of the Precambrian basement complex in Nigeria. The existence of such a structure is indicative of probable mineralizations associated with it. This study will also be useful in the evaluation and delineation of groundwater abstraction points over the area covered by the study. Finally, this study asserts a probable rejuvenation of the seemingly dormant fault zone in the future in response to the geodynamics of the earth crust.
